Our Story

The Hayden Literacy Center was born out of both heartbreak and hope.

For founder Christie Ranslow, the journey began at home.

Her mother lived her entire life unable to read. Christie watched her carry the weight of shame and the false belief that she was “stupid.” Her mother often felt like her life didn’t matter, yet the impact of her life and her struggles with literacy have been profound. It has shaped everything Christie has done since.

As a child, Christie promised her mother that she would one day become a teacher and change that story for others. That promise became her life’s purpose.

She spent decades in public, private, and homeschool classrooms teaching students from preschool through high school. She became a reading specialist, literacy coach, and mentor to teachers, always searching for the most effective ways to reach struggling learners.

But it was one particular student, a freckled, red-haired boy named Hayden, who reignited her calling.

Severely dyslexic, Hayden faced what felt like an impossible journey. With Christie’s guidance, he learned to read and graduated from high school with honors.

The center carries Hayden’s name to honor his determination and to represent every child who has been told they can’t.

At Hayden Literacy Center, we believe every child deserves the chance to unlock their potential, discover the joy of reading, and build a future filled with possibilities.

This is more than teaching. It’s life-changing work rooted in love, perseverance, and an unwavering belief that literacy is a right, not a privilege.
