When Reading Feels Impossible, Confidence and Dreams Slip Away

When your child can’t read or write at grade level, school becomes a daily battle.

Homework drags on for hours.

Simple assignments bring tears.

Teachers assure you to “just wait,” but deep down you know it’s not getting better.

That’s the external problem—you see your child falling behind. Internally, you’re left anxious and helpless, watching your child’s self-esteem crumble. And here’s the truth: it’s just plain wrong that bright kids struggle and fall behind their peers when the real issue is that they haven’t been taught in the way their brain learns best.

Left unchecked, this gap grows wider, leading to lost confidence, limited opportunities, and abandoned dreams.

Turn Struggles Into Strengths and Frustration Into Joy

Imagine your child picking up a book with confidence. Imagine the pride on their face when they can read out loud, finish homework independently, and believe in themselves again. With the right instruction, your child can make significant progress in a short time. That transformation is possible, and it starts here.

Here’s how:

Christie Ranslow

For Christie Ranslow, teaching isn’t just a career—it’s a lifelong mission. Growing up with illiterate parents, Christie witnessed firsthand the heartbreak and shame that comes when someone is denied the ability to read. She promised her mother she would one day become a teacher and help others avoid that pain. Decades later, Christie has fulfilled that promise hundreds of times over.

As a Certified Reading Specialist through the State of Oregon and with over 25 years of teaching experience in public, private, and homeschool settings, Christie has guided students of all ages to overcome reading struggles. She is also a certified Structured Literacy Teacher and has been trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach. But more than credentials, Christie brings compassion, patience, and a relentless belief that every child can succeed.

At Hayden Literacy Center, named after one of her most determined former students, Christie’s mission is simple:

unlock the gift of reading for every child and give families hope for the future.

What Parents Say

"Christie has literally saved my son Hayden’s life. In just under three years, she took him from a child who couldn’t spell his own name to reading at a 5th grade level. She has done more with Hayden in two years than the school did in five."

"The keys that Christie gave my son to unlock his brain have been priceless. He went from reluctant and angry to confident, thriving in high school with a 3.76 GPA. She is a truly amazing and nurturing teacher."
